There can be many reasons why joints need renovation through mortar raking. Over many years, sun and rain affect the joints. Mason bees can hollow out worn mortar joints and accelerate the decay process. Frost cracks in damp masonry can damage mortar joints and bricks. Other reasons may include settlement cracks, cracked bricks, or cracks in joints, typically around changes in masonry, windows and doors, or stairs.
What damages to the joints should you look for?
You can easily assess the condition of the joints by taking a walk around your house and inspecting the masonry.
- Are the joints between the bricks intact?
- Do the joints still fill the space between the bricks?
- Is the surface of the joints intact and without major flaking?
- Are there holes from mason bees?
- Are there places where the joints are completely missing?
- Are there cracks in joints or bricks?
- Are there cracks above windows and doors or at the eaves and protruding parts?
- Are there frost-cracked bricks?
These replaceable mortar rake units with carbide blades are mounted directly on the M14 spindle. The mortar rake unit with 4 blades provides significantly faster removal compared to a unit with 3 blades, and the angle grinder vibrates less and is perceived as smoother in operation. Additionally, with 4 blades, you will achieve a longer lifespan, especially in slightly harder joints.
